R.I. police say man had 0.491 blood alcohol level Jul 23, 2008, 05:59
R.I. - State police say they arrested a man early Tuesday whose blood alcohol level was 0.491 percent — the highest ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn't dead. Stanley Kobierowski was taken to a hospital, put in the detoxification unit and sedated, said Maj. Steven O'Donnell. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and he was released after promising to appear Friday at a court hearing. "The person's lucky they survived," O'Donnell said. "There's no doubt he would have gotten killed or killed someone if he had continued on the route he was taking."

"King of Spam" dethroned with 47-month sentence in Seattle court Jul 23, 2008, 05:44
Robert Soloway abdicated his throne as king of Internet spammers Tuesday when he apologized in court for being a "nuisance" to tens of millions of computer users before being sentenced to 47 months in prison and ordered to forfeit more than $708,000. U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman told the 28-year-old Soloway that he was being made an example of — but not to the extent federal prosecutors had sought. His sentence was less than half of the nine-year sentence the government had argued for during a nearly three-day sentencing hearing.

Los Angeles bans plastic bagging in stores Jul 23, 2008, 05:18
The city of Los Angeles announced it will ban all plastic bags from retail stores as of July 1, 2010, following similar anti-pollution regulations already enforced in San Francisco. The second-largest US city behind New York, Los Angeles, with its four million population, will ban plastic bagging in all supermarkets, grocery and retail stores, the Los Angeles City Council said in its new regulation. After July 1, 2010, all store customers must provide their own bags or purchase bags made of paper or other biogradable material from the store for 25 cents (0.25 dollar), it added.

Starbucks announces 19 store closures in Washington Jul 18, 2008, 05:38
Starbucks released a list Friday of 600 stores in the United States that it will close by the end of July. The list includes 19 stores in Washington state. The company, battered by a weakening economy and a stock hovering near 5-year-lows, announced the move to close the 600 company-owned stores last week. Starbucks said 70 percent of those slated for closure had opened after the start of 2006. About 12,000 workers, or 7 percent of Starbucks' global work force, will be affected by the closings, which are expected to take place between late July and the middle of 2009, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil said. O'Neil said most employees will be moved to nearby stores, but she did not know exactly how many jobs will be lost. Starbucks estimated $8 million in severance costs.

Disney names new hosts to replace Ebert and Roeper Jul 23, 2008, 05:55
A day after influential critic Roger Ebert quit the film-review show he co-created three decades ago, the Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday named two new hosts and unveiled a new format for the nationally syndicated program. Ben Lyons, a film critic from cable channel E! Entertainment Television, and Ben Mankiewicz, a moderator on cable network Turner Classic Movies, will take over as hosts of Ebert's old show when it is relaunched on September 6, said Disney's Buena Vista Productions studio. The show will be renamed "At the Movies," dropping the surnames of Ebert and Richard Roeper, the program's last permanent co-host, from the title.
